I was thinking this morning as I was getting ready for my day about things that had been weighing on me as of late. It was at that moment that I had to stop and ask myself one very important question. What am I saying about me?
There is a fundamental truth that I have known since I was a child and have continued to learn over the years. That truth is simply, I KNOW what the Word of God has to say about me. The real question then becomes what am I saying about me.
Let’s take a look at some things that we think and say about ourselves. These are things that are formed as a result of situations that we face, circumstances that come up, issues that we deal with, etc. They are often times based on the opinions that others express to us and about us. It is because we value the opinions of those closest to us in life that we tend to start thinking and speaking those same things about ourselves.
However, may I suggest to you that those opinions are often times contrary to the Word of God and what God thinks about us. There are plenty of scriptures that speak directly to how God sees us, what He thinks about us, and how we are to see ourselves. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “ For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Deuteronomy 28:2, “And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God.” (It continues all the way through verse 14 and lays out all the ways God wants us blessed….I might suggest you read these scriptures for yourself as I don’t have the space to list them all here).
2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” Ephesians 2:4-6 says, “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:”
There are so many more but these are just a few that give us a really good snapshot of how God looks at us and says about us. Yet, we allow situations in life, circumstances, struggles, and the opinion of others to skew this. We don’t speak them loudly enough or often enough and it causes us to now walk in the fullness of we are in Christ.
The Lord then reminded me of 2 more scriptures that are of utmost importance. Deuteronomy30:19 says, “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing. Therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live,” and Proverbs 18:21 that says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
So here is what I did, I just started speaking the truth of God’s Word over my life and have made the absolute decision that I am only going to say what God says about me. I am no longer going to allow circumstances and situations in life dictate how I see myself or say to myself. In a nutshell, I am changing the way I think and what I say.
If you have struggled in this area then here is a simple confession you can say to yourself every day. Memorize it and speak it out loud and refuse to allow the opinions of others to sway you from this. Say this right now and out loud:
“Lord, I thank you that you loved me so much that You gave Yourself for me. I thank you that you have caused me to be the head and not the tail. I thank you that you have called me to be a conqueror and an overcomer in every area of my life. You cause me to excel in everything that I do and lead me in Wisdom and Strength to face every day. Thank you that you have caused me to become the righteousness of God and raised me up to sit with You in Heavenly places. I thank you that my body is healed and whole and that it functions according to how You created it to. I thank you that no weapon formed against me shall prosper and what the enemy meant for evil You have turned for my good. You said that life and death were in the power of the tongue so I choose to use my tongue today to worship and glorify You and speak life over me in every area of my life, spirit, soul, and body. I receive EVERYTHING you have for me that will cause me to be a blessing to others, in Jesus name!”
So the question you now must ask yourself, what are you saying about you?
